Last year, Samsung and HTC received a lot of flak for automatically boosting the CPU and GPU speed on their flagship devices, while running certain benchmarks to inflate their scores. Now, it looks like CyanogenMod is adding a similar functionality to their ROM.
Yesterday, Steve Kondik a.k.a Cyanogen himself pushed the code to their Gerrit along with triggers for popular benchmarks like Quadrant and Antutu.
This means that going forward, all CyanogenMod running devices will also enter into a high performance mode, as seen on the One M8, while running benchmarks. While CyanogenMod will provide an option to disable it, I am not sure if this move is going to be welcomed by the community.
Steve Kondik, however, said in a comment in Gerrit that Performance profiles is “going to grow into a much more powerful feature which can apply advanced optimizations or power saving techniques depending on both the state of the hardware as well as the current applications in use.”
On the flip side, down the line performance profile will allow users to force device into a low power mode while running certain applications to preserve battery life. While the feature in itself is a decent addition, it is the trigger for benchmarking apps, which is going to piss off a lot of users.
