The touch latency of a display plays a major factor in the visible performance of any device. In a nutshell, touch latency is the delay between the user tapping a button or scrolling a list and that action actually taking place.

Traditionally, Android devices have always had terrible touch latency, which always gave an impression of them being slower than the iPhone and iPad.

Up until now, the Note 3 was the only Android device that bested the touch latency of the iPhone 5 and 5s. Now, as per tests conducted by Lesnumerques, the new HTC One (M8) sets a new record for the lowest touch latency at only 46ms. This is a whopping 29ms lower than the iPhone 5s, which can easily make a perceptible difference in the device smoothness.

Apart from the Note 3, all the other Android devices have an average touch latency of around ~110-150ms, which plays a major role in them not feeling as smooth as the iPhone. Thanks to such a low touch frequency, the new HTC One (M8) feels extremely smooth like an iPhone, which cannot be said for most of the other Android devices out there.

The test does not include scores from the Galaxy S5 or the Xperia Z2, so we need to wait and watch as to how the displays on these devices perform.
