milk-music-androidSamsung today announced its entrance into the crowded streaming radio business with its new Milk Music service. Powered by Slacker, the Milk offers 200 ad-free music stations with millions of songs from all major music labels for Galaxy customers to enjoy. Milk Music is brings a free music streaming service to Galaxy customers and serves as a value add-on for customers who buy a Galaxy phone. It’s a win-win for Samsung, who can advertise the free music streaming to its customers, while avoiding the complexity of music licensing by piggy-backing on Slackers existing service.

“Milk Music introduces a fresh approach to music that reflects our innovation leadership and our focus on creating best-in-class consumer experiences,” said Gregory Lee, president and CEO of Samsung Telecommunications America and Samsung Electronics North America Headquarters. “We’re offering consumers amazing, rich music experiences built around what matters most to them and their lifestyle.”

The Milk Music app uses a central wheel to dial in and navigate between station genres. Users can turn the dial to listen to genres as well as view sub-genres by slowly moving the dial wheel. As users switch from station to station, the location in a song is remembered, making it easy for users to jump back and forth between songs. Users can create personal stations based on their favorite artists or songs and the service will pick similar music to fill the queue. A feedback system allows users to rate a song to improve and personalize the music recommendation engine.

The Milk Music app is available for free from the Google Play Store. It is compatible with the Galaxy S 4, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note II and the upcoming Galaxy S 5. It is only available in the US at launch.
