Rumors and leaks floating around the Internet for quite sometime suggest that Nokia plans on releasing an Android running handset sometime soon. Today, the Wall Street Journal reports that the ex-Finnish giant is going to release an Android-powered handset at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Before you get too excited, the Nokia “Normandy” handset is going to be a low-end phone with around 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. The handset — expected to be called “Nokia X” — will be running Android, the UI is going to resemble that of the l0w-end Asha smartphones sold by Nokia.

According to WSJ’s report, the company had already started working on its Android powered smartphone before being acquired by Microsoft in September last year. The handset, however, is not going to come with the Play Store and core Google apps installed. Instead, Nokia will be porting some of its apps and services to the platform including Here Maps and Nokia MixRadio.

Nokia has scheduled a “meet us under the tree” event on 24th February at Barcelona in Mobile World Congress, which will begin at 8:30PM CET.

Nokia has traditionally targeted the low-end market with its Windows Phone devices so its interesting to see the company release an Android phone targeted towards the same market.
