Less than 24 hours ago, Sprint became the first American operator to announce a launch date and price point (January 31st; $300) for LG’s experimental curved smartphone, the G Flex. Today it’s AT&T’s turn. They’re going to offer the phone at the same $300 price point, but they’ll be offering it a full week earlier: January 24th. Also in the news, LG themselves have announced that the G Flex will launch in 20+ European countries. The U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, and Austria were specifically called out as countries that will get the phone in February.

Should you pick up the G Flex? It’s a 6.0 inch phone, so that’s an immediate turn off for a lot of people. Korean G Flex owners have also reported that they’re experiencing defects with their displays, with bubbles forming under the glass cover. If you’re fine with that, and you want to own a device that will truly stand out from the competition, then go ahead, knock yourself out.

But looking ahead at the next two months: Mobile World Congress is where Sony will announce the Z2. HTC will hold their own event to unveil the One Plus. Samsung will launch the Galaxy S5 in March. And even LG themselves are said to be announcing a new flagship smartphone called the G Pro 2 during the next few weeks.

If you ignore the curved display for a second, the G Flex is basically your average flagship smartphone from early 2013. With all these 2014 flagships coming out, you have to be really confident you want that curved display, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.
