HTC, once mocked for being late to update their devices to the latest version of Android, is now shaping up to be the best handset maker with regards to product support. The company’s US and UK Twitter accounts have confirmed that the One will get Android 4.4 KitKat by the end of January. And as for the Droid DNA, better known around the world as the HTC Butterfly, that’s due to get KitKat by the end of Q1 2014 (translation: March).

Why has HTC become so proactive? The positive answer to this question is that the company is doubling down on customer satisfaction. That by making sure HTC owners get the latest software, it’ll create positive buzz. The negative answer to this question is that HTC’s sales numbers are so low that the company can’t afford to have a wide portfolio of products. This limited product portfolio makes it easier for the company to stay up to date since they’re not supporting a million variants.

Does being on the latest version of Android even matter? That depends on who you talk to, but for me, I really couldn’t care less. If a device does everything I ask of it, why should I care if I’m on 4.1 versus 4.4? In some circles that’s considered blasphemy, but I can’t help but feel that the Android ecosystem has matured enough to a point where each new release of the operating system doesn’t add new features, so much as it adds polish.

Polish is welcome, but it’s not going to make or break my day.
