Apple’s exhaustive 1 hour 30 minutes event just got over, and the company has announced a plethora of updates for its existing product line-up. Both the iPads have received a fairly major update as well, including a new name for the bigger tablet.

The 9.7-inch iPad has, arguably, got the biggest update of its life with a body that is only 7.5 mm thin and drastically reduced bezel size. Compared to the previous generations, the new iPad is smaller (by 43%), lighter (1 pound vs. 1.4 pounds) and much, much faster thanks to an A7 chip. Apple says that its latest tablet is the lightest full size tablet in the market.

Even with such drastic reductions in dimensions, the new iPad maintains its 10-hour battery life. All these changes were also enough for Apple to rename the full size iPad to iPad Air.

Apple also announced the iPad Mini 2 with faster internals (A7 chip) and the most requested feature since it introduced the product last year – a Retina Display. The 7.9-inch display on the iPad Mini 2 has the same resolution (2045*1536) as the bigger iPad Air, making the screen extremely sharp and crisp.

Other common features on the new iPads include an updated 5MP iSight camera, support for wider LTE networks and Facetime HD cameras. The Wi-Fi chip has also received an update on the tablets and now supports 802.11n MIMO for double the throughput compared to the previous generation tablets. Both the tablets will be available in Silver, White, Space Grey and Black.

The iPad Air retains the same pricing as its predecessor with the 16GB Wi-Fi only variant starting for $499 and the LTE variant coming in at $629. The iPad Mini 2 with Retina Display will, however, set you back by $399 for the 16GB Wi-Fi variant with the LTE variant costing $529. The tablets are already up for pre-order and will start shipping in a bunch of countries from 1st November.
