Both HTC and LG did something with their flagship phones this year that Samsung did not, they introduced the world to optical image stabilization in their phones. If you own an HTC One or an LG G2, the cameras in those respective devices have technology that for one reason or another, Samsung couldn’t get to market on time. Well, that’s soon going the change.

The Korean smartphone, tablet, and component maker has just unveiled a brand spanking new 13 megapixel camera sensor with optical image stabilization. Details are light, but the company says it can correct within 1.5 degrees of motion. They say that’s two times better than the industry’s best, but without numbers from LG or HTC, it’s hard to say whether or not that’s true. Samsung does say they’ll be able to take photos that are “eight times brighter” than they were previously able to thanks to the sensor, but again, without proper testing, it’s just a quote from a press release.

Now for the important question: When? Mass production is slated to start early next year. For those of you who are familiar with the GS5 rumors floating around the internets, which say the GS5 will use a Sony made 16 megapixel sensor with OIS, don’t fret. For all we know, this Samsung manufactured sensor could be for other, potentially equally impressive devices.
