Between now and Halloween, Google is widely expected to host an event where they’ll detail Android 4.4 KitKat and reveal the next Nexus phone. Screenshots of Android 4.4 leaked yesterday, and there’s not really a ton of obvious new features, though admittedly it was an old build. And as for the Nexus 5, it’s leaked so many times now that the only thing we don’t know about it is the price. But does Google have a third trick up its sleeve?
Artem Russakovskii is a name you should be familiar with. He founded one of my favorite Android sites, Android Police. The team over there really cares about Android from an idealogical point of view, while I’m just like yeah, it’s nice, but I can switch to iOS at the blink of an eye. Anyway, he just published two rumors on his Google+ account that he didn’t have the confidence to publish on Android Police because he’s not sure how accurate they are.
The first one is actually kind of funny. I predicted that Google would announce KitKat on October 31st because it’s the day when people normally give candy to children. Well, Artem says that’s indeed when Google plans to make an announcement.
The second rumor is a bit more wild. He says Google will unveil “Gem”, the codename of the company’s first smartwatch, at the same event where KitKat and the Nexus 5 are unveiled.
Should you believe these rumors? Up to you. Dates are irrelevant to me, for the most part, and as for the watch, that kind of screams obvious, but again, when it’s announced isn’t that important to me, it’s the details of how it’ll work, how much it’ll cost, and when can I buy it that are meaningful.
