HTC is updating its camera app with RAimage support, part of a continuing effort to ramp up the photographic performance on its newest flagship smartphone.

RAimages are those untouched by the camera’s software, so if the HTC One M9 is still struggling with post-processing you might be able to salvage a higher-quality image from the 20-megapixel camera. They’re also quite large, eat up a lot of storage space. You’ll need software like ghtroom or otoshop to process the RAimage save it as a more common easily shared format, like G.

The update fulfills an earlier promise by HTC to bring this capability to its newest smartphone. The camera update brings some tweaks to other models, too. The HTC One Eye gets several new camera modes, including some type of “crop-me-in” feature.

The camera update complete changelog is live in the ay Store.

The story behind the story: The HTC One M9 comes with a 20-megapixel camera, but its performance got off to a disappointing start. Since then HTC has pushed out a software update to step things up, though our One M9 camera test afterwards found the improvements were only marginal. Raw image support is another good step, but this phone is still lagging behind the impressive Galaxy S6.
