There are a lot of things you’d want to catch while playing kémon Go. A malware infection is not one of them.

Researchers from Security firm oofpoint discovered a modified, infected version of the wildly popular game for Android, making catching malware a very real possibility for some users. According to the company, the malicious version of the game carries the Droidck malware, which lets attackers gain remote access control of your Android device.

oofpoint has “not observed this malicious A in the wild.” Instead, the malware-laced version”was uploaded to a malicious file repository service […] less than 72 hours after the game was officially released in New Zeal Australia.” That, of course, doesn’t rule out the possibility that an infected version of kémon Go is out in the wild, but it is a little good news for players out there.

so, this infected version of the game must be “sideloaded”—that is, you have to go through the trouble of bypassing the ay Store installing it manually. If you downloaded the official kémon Go game from ay, you don’t have to worry about malware.

But the malware-laced version of kémon Go is more of a concern in countries in which the game has yet to be officially released.

“kely due to the fact that the game had not been officially released globally at the same time, many gamers wishing to access the game before it was released in their region resorted to downloading the A from third parties,” oofpoint notes. “Additionally, many large media outlets provided instructions on how to download the game from a third party.”

Malware-laced apps on Android aren’t a new issue, it likely isn’t a problem that’s going away. As this instance shows, though, you are at a much higher risk of infection if you download apps from sources outside ay or other reputable app stores. If you think you may have downloaded an infected version of kémon Go, oofpoint provides instructions for identifying the hacked, malicious build that it found.
