The Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are easily the most leaked smartphone of the year. It was a similar story with the Pixel 3 last year and instead of controlling the leaks, Google has somehow managed to do even worse. While the Pixel 4 series will be announced in around 24 hours from now, almost everything about the phones have leaked.

Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL Features Leaked: Everything We Know

Design

This one should not be surprising. Google itself went ahead and gave us a glimpse of the design of the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL months before its release. Like the iPhone 11 Pro series, the Google Pixel 4 has a squarish camera hump at its rear. However, unlike the iPhone 11 Pro series, the Pixel 4 only has a dual-camera setup at the rear.

At the front, Google has gotten rid of the XL-size notch that it had debuted on the Pixel 3 XL last year. Instead, it gets a regular sized chin at the top and bottom. The top bezel is slightly larger than the bottom bezel.

The front design of the Pixel 4 XL is admittedly not in line with other smartphones launched this year featuring minimal bezels. However, Google needed the bezel at the top to accommodate all the hardware and sensors for Soli ‘Motion Gestures.’

Despite coming with sizeable bezels at the front, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will no longer feature front-firing stereo speakers. Instead, the bottom speaker will fire downwards, with the earpiece at the top acting as the secondary speaker. This is similar to what Apple does on the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro or what Samsung does on the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 series.

Display

After the Pixel 2 XL display fiasco, Google was smart enough to focus on the display with the Pixel 3 series. This year is no different. The leaks have already confirmed that the Pixel 4 XL and Pixel 4 will come with a 6.3-inch QHD+ and 5.7-inch FHD+ OLED display. The displays on both phones will feature a 90Hz refresh rate and Google will market it as Smooth Display.

90Hz refresh rate will have a major impact in terms of smoothness, though one of its cons is that it has a major impact on battery life as well. The higher refresh rate of the display might just help the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL in feeling smoother to use than even the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. It remains to be seen if the display panel itself is also as good and can rival the likes of the iPhone 11 Pro and Galaxy Note 10+ in terms of color accuracy and brightness or not.

Camera

The highlight of the Pixel 4 series are going to be its dual-camera setup. The primary camera is going to be a 12MP one which is going to be paired with 16MP telephoto sensor. While the entire smartphone industry is including an ultra-wide angle lens on their smartphones, Google has decided to skip it on its Pixel 4 lineup this year.

Leaks have already detailed a number of new camera features that the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will come with. This includes Astrophotography allowing one to capture the Night sky using the phone, Action mode to capture moving objects, improved night mode, and more.

It is unknown as of now if Google will also be improving the video recording capabilities of the Pixel 4 series or not.

The Pixel 4 will also ship with a new Google Camera 7.1 app with an improved UI/UX. This should lead to the phones offering a better camera experience than their predecessor.

At the front, Google is going to ditch the dual-camera setup of the Pixel 3 and stick to a single 8MP camera.

Motion Sense

Apart from the camera, the Soli-based gestures are going to be another highlight of the Pixel 4 series. The Soli sensors are also the reason as to why the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL come with chunky bezels at the front.

Using Soli, Google will offer Motion Sense on the Pixel 4 series which will allow users to control various aspects of the phone using simple gestures. This includes the ability to control music playback using gestures, snoozing or dismissing alarms, rejecting incoming calls, and more.

Google will also offer Face Unlock on the Pixel 4 series. In fact, the company is going to rely so heavily on it that it will not include any fingerprint sensor on the phones.

Other Specs

The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will ship with a Snapdragon 855 chipset. The smaller Pixel 4 will ship with a 2,800mAh battery while the bigger Pixel 4 XL will ship with a 3,700mAh battery. Other specs include 18W fast charging, Qi wireless charging, USB-C, Titan M security chip, no headphone jack, Wi-Fi ac, and Bluetooth 5.0.

The phones will also come with Pixel Neural Core, a new chip for AI and neural processing that will likely power some of the new camera features on the Pixel 4 series.

Being a Pixel, the phones will run on Android 10 with the very latest security patch. Google is also promising three years of security updates for the phones. The new Pixels will also mark the launch of next-gen Google Assistant that will process requests locally making it notably faster than the existing version of the personal assistant.

Google will be offering the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL in three colors: Just Black, Clearly White, and Oh So Orange.

Storage and RAM

Google is finally getting around to bumping the amount of RAM on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. Both phones will come with 6GB RAM — up from 4GB found on the Pixel 3 series. The additional 2GB of RAM should definitely help improve the overall smoothness and multitasking performance of the devices, though it is still lower than 8GB of RAM which is found on the likes of the other Android flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S10, Huawei P30 Pro, and others.

As for storage, all leaks point to the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL coming in 64GB and 128GB storage variants. Google is positioning the Pixel as a flagship series so it is a shame to see the company offer its smartphones with only up to 128GB storage.

Price and Availability

The pricing of the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL have also leaked. The Pixel 4 will start from $799 while the Pixel 4 XL will likely start from $899. This puts these phones just below the likes of the iPhone 11 Pro and Galaxy Note 10+ but they are still very expensive phones. Google will try to soften the blow by bundling a Chromebook with Pixel 4 pre-orders in selected markets.

Up until last year, Google only offered the Pixel 4 series through Verizon apart from selling an unlocked version through its online store. This time around, Google is expanding the availability as rumors point to both T-Mobile and Sprint selling the Pixel 4 alongside Verizon.
