Despite the U.S. ban, Huawei’s smartphone growth has not faltered. For the April-June quarter, Huawei posted a 23 percent increase in revenue and managed to ship an impressive 118 million smartphones in the first half of the year.
This is up 24% YoY and includes shipments of Huawei’s sub-brand Honor as well.
This means Huawei shipped around 59 million smartphones each quarter in the first half of 2019. The numbers put the company on track to ship over 200 million smartphones by the end of this year. This will be nothing short of amazing given how Huawei’s smartphone business was affected globally after the U.S. put it on an Entity list.
The company saw its revenue growing rapidly until May after which the U.S. ban put a dampener on its smartphone sales internationally.
“Revenue grew fast up through May,” said Huawei’s Chairman Liang Hua. “Given the foundation we laid in the first half of the year, we continue to see growth even after we were added to the entity list. That’s not to say we don’t have difficulties ahead. We do, and they may affect the pace of our growth in the short term.”
Huawei’s dominance in China is one of the key reasons behind its smartphone business doing so well. In its home market, Huawei has managed to increase its market share to almost 38% in Q2 2019 and posted an impressive 31% YoY growth. The company’s smartphone shipments in China accounted for 64% of its total smartphone shipments.
Huawei’s gain was the loss of its competitors including Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Apple which saw their market share decline by double digits.
