Acer is a company that doesn’t get a ton of coverage on this site because … let’s be honest, they’re not a very important player. If you’re buying an Android phone, chances are there are only two or three brands you care about, and I guarantee you that Acer isn’t one of them. (taylorsmithconsulting) With that disclaimer out of the way, it’s time to cover their latest smartphone, because it does something no other smartphone has done before: record 4K video.
The device, known as the Liquid S2, has a 6 inch 1080p display, 13 megapixel camera, 3,300 mAh battery, 2GB of RAM, and it’s powered by Qualcomm’s brand spanking new Snapdragon 800. This isn’t the first Snapdragon 800 device, that honor goes to the Xperia Ultra Z. Nor is it the second Snapdragon 800 device, that silver prize goes to LG’s G2. But like I said earlier, it is the first phone that can record 4K video, so that’s at least worth some attention.
How useful is 4K video? Considering that an entry level 4K TV costs many, many, many times more than a fancy pants 1080p display, it’s going to be a while until 4K becomes mainstream. If you have the Liquid S2 however, you’re all set.
When will “big” brands have 4K video recording? It’s a feature that’s rumored for Sony’s new flagship phone, the Z1, due to be announced in two days. Some also say the Note III will have 4K recording, but I doubt that.
