Samsung is rolling out a new biometrics security patch for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ that seems to dramatically improve the in-display fingerprint scanner performance. The relatively small 7MB update is automatically showing up on Galaxy S10 units across the world and cannot be triggered by manually checking for system updates.

Samsung is using an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S10 which promises to be faster and more secure than optical in-display fingerprint scanners used on other devices. However, the reality seems to be different than that as the Galaxy S10’s fingerprint scanner performance has been consistently criticized and it has also been proven to be easily faked using a 3D printed fingerprint.

Galaxy S10 biometrics update

It looks like via this urgent biometrics update, Samsung is looking to solve all such fingerprint woes on the Galaxy S10 and S10+ for good. Most Galaxy S10 owners who have already received the update claim that their fingerprint scanner unlocks the device almost instantly every time. Its accuracy also seems to have improved as it now properly reads one’s fingerprint almost every time.

Interestingly, the update is also being rolled out for the Galaxy S10e and it seemingly improves the performance of its fingerprint scanner as well.

For now, the update seems to be only available to Galaxy S10 units in the EU region. However, a wider rollout from Samsung should be on the cards. The update likely does not require prior carrier approval so Samsung should be able to roll it out notably faster than regular OTAs.
