Over the last couple of years, we have seen the likes of Huawei and Oppo come up with fast charging technology with speeds of up to 50W. Most smartphones usually charge at speeds of anywhere between 15-20W but with 50W, Huawei and Oppo are able to charge their smartphones to 50 percent in just around 20 minutes. Xiaomi now seems to be ready to take things to the next level as the company’s founder has teased a 100W fast charging solution.

Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s co-founder, has posted a video demonstrating a 100W fast charging technology. The charging speeds are fast enough to charge a smartphone with a 4,000mAh battery from 0-100 percent in just 17 minutes. Yep, you read that right — 17 minutes! 0-50 percent took an impressive 7 minutes.

In the video below, Xiaomi compared its fast charging solution with Oppo’s 50W solution which charged a smartphone with 3700mAh battery. While Xiaomi’s solution took 17 minutes to charge from 0-100 percent, the Oppo phone charged to 65 percent in the same amount of time.

Charging a smartphone at such a high speed is definitely not good for the lifespan of the battery. It also remains to be seen how Xiaomi will handle all the heat generated by transferring such a huge amount of power to the battery in such a small span of time.

Xiaomi has already unveiled the Mi 9 at MWC 2019 so we can possibly see the company debut this technology on its next Mix flagship smartphone.

Xiaomi will be talking more about its 100W fast charging technology at an event tomorrow.
