Phones will always rely on gimmicks to try and get attention, and sometimes those ideas are simply natural steps forward.

Take, for example, “the world’s first holeless phone”, a title that Meizu is giving itself for the announcement of the Zero smartphone. This handset doesn’t have any ports, and it doesn’t have any buttons, either. Meizu really did build a phone that doesn’t have any holes in it.

It goes beyond the expected buttons and ports, too. Meizu dropped the SIM card slot, too. There is no charging port, either. The Zero is a smartphone that relies on a wireless life, including charging. Meizu says the Zero is a seamless ceramic device, which also features a pair of cameras on the back. The fingerprint sensor is embedded in the display.

The handset also features Meizu’s “mSound 2.0” technology, which means the 5.99-inch AMOLED display can also serve as a speaker. The buttons on the side are virtual and will apply a haptic feedback sensation when pressed to turn the phone on or off, as well as control the volume. The wireless charging can support speeds up to 18W with Meizu’s own “Super mCharge Wireless” technology. And because there is no space for a physical SIM card, Meizu is relying on eSIM technology.

Finally, the handset is IP68-rated for water and dust resistance.

There is no word on a price, launch date, or when the Meizu Zero might become available. However, with Mobile World Congress scheduled to take place next month it’s possible we hear more at that event.
