Following in the footsteps of Huawei/Honor, Xiaomi will be splitting its Redmi and Mi brand into two independent entities. Huawei did something similar with its Honor sub-brand which it uses to launch its budget offerings.
On a similar tone, Xiaomi will be using its Redmi brand for its budget Redmi offerings which will have a high value for money ratio and will be primarily sold through online channels. The Mi brand will be used for the company’s flagship and premium devices like the Mi 5, Mi 8 and Mi Mix series.
Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun says the separation of two brands will allow the company to focus better on its Mi devices as well. Apart from Mi and Redmi, Xiaomi also has its Poco sub-brand which sells smartphones with high-end internals on a budget price.
Xiaomi will also be unveiling a new Redmi phone with a 48MP rear camera on January 10 in China. We have already seen Huawei and Honor launch smartphones with a 48MP rear shooter and Xiaomi is only following suit.
A 48MP rear camera will allow the Redmi phone to capture photos with a stunning amount of details in daylight. In low-light, the small (0.8 microns) pixels will pose an issue and Xiaomi is hoping to circumvent that by using pixel binning.
Apart from China, this new 48MP Redmi smartphone from Xiaomi should also make its way to India in the foreseeable future.
