Google today announced a major revamp to its Fit application for Android and iPhone. The redesign does away with steps and puts more emphasis on activity rings to motivate one to meet their daily step goals and move regularly.
Google says the new activity goals are based on AHA and WHO’s activity recommendations. It comprises of Move Minutes and Heart Points.
As the name indicates, Move Minutes is the total number of minutes you have moved throughout the day. The second activity ring is for Heart Points which one can earn by doing a minute of moderate activity at the very minimum. Google says a user can close their rings by just brisk walking for 30 minutes for 5 days a week which can reduce the risk of heart disease, improve sleep and mental health.
The new Google Fit will also be able to detect one’s activity and track them automatically. It will make use of all available sensors on a device or smartwatch including the accelerometer, GPS, and heart rate sensor for accurate tracking.
There’s also a new journal view in the app that will give an overview of one’s activities throughout the day.
If you don’t use Google Fit for your fitness tracking, worry not as the app also integrates with almost every other popular fitness app out there like Strava, Runkeeper, Endomondo, and MyFitnessPal. This will ensure that you will continue to earn Move Minute and Heart Point irrespective of which app you use for tracking.
