Xiaomi Redmi 6

Xiaomi has recently been on a roll launching new smartphones almost every month. Today, in Chian, the company unveiled the successor to the Redmi 5 from last year, the Redmi 6.

The Redmi 6 features a 5.45-inch HD+ IPS display with an 18:9 aspect ratio display. The screen is actually a tad smaller than the 5.7-inch display found on the Redmi 5.

From the front, the handset looks similar to the Redmi 5, though the rear looks slightly different as it now houses a horizontal dual-camera setup. The handset is powered by a 12nm octa-core 2GHz MediaTek Helio P22 chip along with 3/4GB RAM and 32/64GB of storage space. Other specs of the handset include a microSD card slot, Wi-Fi n, Bluetooth 4.2, microUSB port, and a 3,000mAh battery.

Redmi 6A

The handset will go on sale in China for RMB799 for the 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant, with the 4GB/64GB variant priced at RMB 999.

Alongside the Redmi 6, Xiaomi also unveiled the Redmi 6A. The handset has the same design and display as the Redmi 6 but comes with a weaker quad-core Helio A22 chipset along with a paltry 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. Xiaomi will only be launching one variant of the Redmi 6A. As mentioned, other specs of the phone remain the same as the Redmi 6 which means we are looking at a 5.45-inch 720p+ display, dual-SIM slots, microSD card slot, and a 3,000mAh battery. The handset does compromise on the camera as it only comes with a single 13MP shooter.

Both phones feature face unlock powered and a selfie protrait mode powered by AI. There’s also lift to wake which will also automatically trigger face unlock. On the software front, both phones are running Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 10.

The handset is going to be available for around $99 in the United States (RMB599) which means it packs a lot of value for the price it commands.

The Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A are launching in China for now, though Xiaomi will likely launch them in India sooner than later.
