Google today released the first Developer Preview of Android P. While leaks did point to the Android P DP being released this month, it was widely expected that Google would release it towards the middle of the month.

Nonetheless, the first DP of Android P has now been released and the company has also highlighted all the new features it packs. For now, the improvements in Android P are focused more towards developers, with the OS packing very little user-facing changes.

Along with its announcement, Google has also made the image files of the first Developer Preview of Android P available for download on its website. But before you head over to download the image, you need to ensure that you have a compatible device. The first Developer Preview of Android P supports the following devices:

• Google Pixel
• Google Pixel XL
• Google Pixel 2
• Google Pixel 2 XL

As you can see, the first DP of Android P does not support any of the Nexus devices from Google. Given that the last Nexus handsets, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X, were released over two years ago, it is unlikely that we will see Google release a DP build of Android P for them. In fact, it is possible that the handsets will not get the Android P update at all.

Alongside the factory images, Google has also released the OTA image files which you can manually push to your compatible Pixel device. However, there’s no beta program for Android P yet. Google says that it will start the beta program once the OS is ready for public testing with some more user-facing changes thrown in.

Remember that once you install the Developer Preview on your Pixel, you will no longer receive any official OTA update from Google.
