Xperia XZ2

Sony today unveiled its latest flagship smartphones with a new design language: the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact. Both phones come with minimal bezels surrounding their display and the latest and greatest internals that you’d expect from a 2018 flagship.

Xperia XZ2

The Sony Xperia XZ2 features a 5.7-inch Full HD+ 18:9 HDR display. There’s also Sony’s X-reality engine for mobile which automatically converts non-HDR content to near HDR-like content for an improved content viewing experience. The front and rear of the Xperia XZ2 makes use of 3D Gorilla Glass 5 and sandwiches a metal chassis in between. The glass design means the Xperia XZ2 supports wireless charging.

There’s also a new Dynamic Vibrations System which syncs the vibration motor to the beats of the song you are listening or the movie you are watching.

Xperia XZ2 HDR

The 198gms, 11.1mm thick handset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset, packs 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and a microSD card slot. The 19MP Motion Eye camera at the rear features an f/2.0 aperture, and it is capable of recording videos in 4K HDR resolution which makes it among the very few smartphones in the market capable of doing so. And like the Galaxy S9, it can also record 960fps slow-mo videos. Other specs include an IP65/68 certification, 3180mAh battery, Quick Charge 3.0, 5MP front camera, LTE Cat. 18, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, fingerprint sensor, and no headphone jack. There’s also front facing stereo speakers on the handset backed by a DAC for improved sound quality.

Running Android Oreo, the Xperia XZ2 features Sony’s new 3D Creator app that can be used to create 3D scans of objects and people. This feature also works with the selfie camera so one can click their own selfies in 3D using the phone. The handset will be available in Liquid Black, Silver, Deep Green, and Ash Pink colors.

Xperia XZ2 Compact

The Xperia XZ2 Compact packs largely the same specifications as the XZ2 albeit in a smaller form factor. It comes with a 5-inch FHD+ HDR display and trades the glass panel at the rear in favor of polycarbonate plastic. Otherwise, it features the exact same specifications as the Xperia XZ2 except for the switch to a smaller 2870mAh battery. The handset will be available in Black, White silver, Moss Green, and Coral Pink colors.

XZ2 Compact

Both handsets are due for a spring launch, with no word from Sony on their official pricing. Given the company’s previous track record though, do not expect the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact to make it to the United States anytime soon.
