Sony is the sole Android OEM out there that is yet to release smartphones with an 18:9 aspect ratio display and minimal bezels at the front. With even budget Android phones now coming with full view displays at the front, it was puzzling to see Sony release smartphones with huge bezels at the front.

Well, it looks like Sony has managed to bypass all the roadblocks that were stopping it from using 18:9 aspect ratio displays on its smartphones. The latest leak from @evleaks for Venture Beat points to the Japanese company’s next flagship smartphones, the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, featuring an 18:9 display at the front with minimal bezels. As for specs, the Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chip[set and run on Android 8.0 Oreo. The bigger XZ2 will sport a Full HD+ 18:9 aspect ratio LCD display at the front, while the smaller XZ2 Compact will make use of a 5-inch LCD panel. Both displays will be protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5. The Xperia XZ2 will also sport 3D glass at the rear so as to allow for wireless charging. The smaller XZ2 Compact has to make do with only wired charging as it will come with a polycarbonate finish at the back.

The bezels on the front of the Xperia XZ2 is smaller than previous phones from Sony, though they are still a fair bit bigger than what you will see on flagship handsets from Samsung, LG, and Xiaomi.

The rear of both phones will feature a 19MP f/1.8 shooter capable of recording 4K HDR videos and super slow-motion videos in Full HD resolution. The fingerprint scanner has also been moved to the rear of both devices from the power button. Other specs of the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact include USB-C port and a certain degree of IP certification thereby making them dust and water-resistant. The bigger XZ2 will be powered by a 3180mAh battery, while the smaller XZ2 Compact will sport a 2870mAh battery. The XZ2 will also feature ‘S Force’ stereo speakers at the front, while the XZ2 Compact will make its vibration motor vibrate to the tunes of your music.

The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact will be introduced by Sony at the Mobile World Congress occurring next week in Barcelona, Spain.
