Xiaomi’s Mi Max series has always been known for their massive battery capacity and huge displays. The device might not be as popular as its Redmi series, but it still does very well when one considers the fact that it caters to niche customers.
While the Mi Max 3 is likely still a couple of months away from its release, some key details about the device have been revealed thanks to a leaked firmware. The firmware points to the Mi Mix 3 coming with a Snapdragon 660 chipset, a massive 5,550mAh battery, and an 18:9 aspect ratio display. While the display size is unknown, the switch to an 18:9 panel means the Mi Max 3 will likely sport a display size of around 7-inches.
More interestingly perhaps, the Mi Max 3 leaked firmware points to the device coming with wireless charging. This would mean the handset would come with a glass back as current technological limitations don’t allow for wireless charging on devices with a metal build. A graphic image found in the leaked firmware adds further credence to the Mi Max 3 coming with wireless charging.
The firmware also points to the Mi Max 3 using Sony’s IMX363 camera sensor at the rear or Samsung’s S5K217+S5K5E8 sensors in a dual-camera setup. It is at the front, where things get more interesting. Apart from a Samsung S5K4H7 sensor, the Mi Max 3 will also come with an iris scanner. The component mentioned in the firmware is supplied by OmniVision which leverages its PureCel technology for iris recognition.
The front auxiliary module mentioned here is the OmniVision 2281 which “leverages a 1.12-micron pixel with PureCel technology to enable accurate, reliable iris recognition for smartphones, tablets, and notebooks” according to its official page.
The firmware file points to the sensor still being in development so its possible that Xiaomi could end up ditching the sensor in the end due to some unforeseen circumstances.
The firmware is based on Android 8.1 Oreo, though the development of the device started with Android 7.1 Nougat. Other specs revealed by the leaked firmware include LED light, an IR blaster, dual SIM card slots, and aptX HD.
Xiaomi will likely unveil the Mi Max 3 in around 2-3 months from now. The handset has always done well in China and parts of Asia where ‘phablets’ are in high demand.
