At this point, the Pixel 2 XL’s display issues are well documented. Google themselves have acknowledged some of the problems and will be rolling out a software update to improve the display’s performance. And to further reinstate consumer confidence in the handsets, the company has also extended the warranty of the handsets to two years.
The Pixel 2 XL’s display issues stem from the fact that Google has sourced them from LG and not Samsung, the world’s largest and best OLED supplier. Samsung and Google have a close relationship as they collaborate with each other for many new technologies, but it looks like the Korean giant is not liking Google’s new push into hardware. While Google has launched smartphones and other devices under its Nexus branding for years, the company became much more serious about its hardware ambitions with its Pixel lineup of devices this year. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have largely been crowned as the best Android smartphone of this year but the bigger Pixel’s POLED display has come under a lot of criticism for its poor viewing angles, burn-in issues, and dull colors. The sources of all these problems boil down to Google sourcing the 6-inch panel from LG whose OLED panel technology is at least a few years behind Samsung.
