Huawei P10 review - back, smooth metal on the whole...

Welcome to today’s AndroidBeat daily briefing where we bring you up to date with the latest happenings in the world of Android. Today’s briefing contains news that is bound to make Huawei fans happy, two new smartphone launches in India from Lenovo, some leaked renders of Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 2, and more.

Huawei is Now World’s Second Largest Smartphone Vendor

Huawei managed to beat Apple to become the world’s second largest smartphone vendor in June and July. The company is also on track to repeat its success in August. This is the first time that a Chinese vendor has managed to surpass Apple in terms of smartphone sales. There is usually a lull in iPhone sales from June as most buyers hold off for the next version of the handset. Nonetheless, that does not change the fact that Huawei’s feat is very impressive.

Interestingly, despite Huawei becoming the world’s second largest smartphone OEM, none of its smartphones made it to the top ten list in terms of sales. Counterpoint analysts note that this is due to Huawei having multiple SKUs of the same handset for different markets, with a different flagship for various markets as well.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Renders Leak

Xiaomi will be unveiling the Mi Mix 2, the successor to its bezel-less wonder from last year, on September 11. Before Xiaomi could unveil the device though, some beautiful renders of the device have leaked that give us a clear look at its design.

Xiaomi is upping the bezel-less trend with the Mi Mix 2 and its 93% screen-to-body ratio. The handset has almost no bezel at the top, with the bottom sporting a minor bezel for the camera sensor and touch panel circuit. Like the Galaxy S8 and S7, the Mi Mix 2 also seems to sport a display that curves on its edges.

While we have already seen quite a fair bit of bezel-less phones this year, the Mi Mix 2 looks the most beautiful of them all based on these leaked renders.

Lenovo K8 Plus Launched in India

Lenovo K8 Plus

Less than a month ago, Lenovo launched the K8 Note in India. Today, the company has launched the K8 Plus. The handset runs on a stock build of Android 7.1 Nougat with only a few additions thrown in by the company. The handset sits below the K8 Note and sports a 5.2-inch 720p display, a MediaTek Helio P25 chipset, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, microSD card slot, a 4000mAh battery and a dual-camera setup at the back.

The primary sensor is a 13MP one used for capturing stills, while the secondary 5MP sensor is used for capturing depth information. This allows the K8 Plus to offer a bokeh mode similar to that of the iPhone 7 Plus.

The Lenovo K8 Plus goes on sale in India on Flipkart from September 7 for Rs 10,999.

Lenovo will also be rolling out an offline-only model of the K8 with a single 13MP shooter and a slower MediaTek P20 chipset. It will also feature a 5.2-inch 720p display at the front.
