Xiaomi today announced that it will be unveiling the successor to its last year bezel-less wonder, the Mi Mix, on September 11 in China. This means that the Mi Mix 2 will be unveiled just a day before the iPhone 8 will be announced by Apple.
The original Mi Mix from last year started the whole bezel-less trend. Back then, no other company had managed to launch a smartphone with almost non-existent bezels. The original Mi Mix was a concept phone from Xiaomi and was sold only in limited quantities.
Since the launch of the Mi Mix though, OEMs like Samsung and LG have also gone ahead and launched their own bezel-less phones — Galaxy S8 and LG G6 — which feature an even higher body-to-screen ratio than the Mi Mix.
For the Mi Mix 2, Xiaomi is expected to have worked closely with French designer Philippe Starck once again. The device is expected to come with even thinner bezels this time around and a slightly smaller and more manageable 6-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio display.
Unlike the original Mi Mix, the Mi Mix 2 is likely not going to be a concept phone and should be available in adequate quantities in China. Other rumored specs of the handset include a Snapdragon 835 chipset, 6GB RAM, and a 3400mAh battery.
Ironically, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 8 with a bezel-less front and a notch display design just a day later on September 12. While both these handsets are going to be impressive in their own right, they both won’t be fighting for consumer attention because of the limited (regional) availability of the Mi Mix 2.
