According to internal Android 8.0 code discovered in the Android Developers website by the good folks at XDA, Android apps will soon be able to leverage the power of Google Assistant within their apps. This essentially means that you will be able to launch Google Assistant to perform certain tasks without having to leave the app. This also leaves you open to use Google’s built-in features with other voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa or Microsoft’s Cortana.

Simply put, this code suggests that an app can create a new task in the Android activity manager, which leverages Google Assistant. Naturally, there are a few caveats to consider before we get excited about this. Firstly, this is only possible with Android 8.0 devices right now. Secondly, developers will have to make sure their apps support the new version of Android. Naturally, there won’t be a lot of apps right now that fit the criteria, but one would hope that this feature will be used widely eventually.

This move could be great for Google as it would increase user engagement with Assistant, which is arguably one of the best voice assistants available in the market. Leveraging Google’s vast library of data for queries, the voice assistant also powers Google Home, the company’s dedicated home voice assistant. While the debate is still up on whether Google Assistant is better than Amazon Alexa, bringing integration with third party apps is certainly a step in the right direction.
