It is going to be almost three months since Andy Rubin unveiled the Essential Phone. While the phone was supposed to go on sale after a month of its unveiling, the promised time frame came and went by with no word from the company.
In the third week of July, Andy Rubin sent out an email to early backers of the handset informing them that the device was in final stages of carrier testing and will ship in a few weeks. Now, speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Essential’s President Nicole De Masi has said that the phone is “a few weeks away” from its final release. The company will provide a final release date for the handset “in a week.”
“We’re a few weeks away,” said Niccolo De Masi, Essential’s president, repeating what company founder Andy Rubin said a few weeks ago. “I will give you an exact date in a week.”
Since Essential has not announced any date, it’s possible that the one week time frame from the company will extend beyond that. Whatever the case might be, these delays in shipping the final product does not bode well for the Essential Phone and the company itself.
Once the iPhone 8 and other Android heavyweights like the Galaxy Note 8 and Pixel 2 launches, most consumers are all but going to forget about the Essential Phone. The iPhone 8 launch is particularly going to hit the consumer interest in the phone since both devices come with a notch display design at the front. The premium pricing and the limited availability of the Essential Phone do not help things either.
