Xiaomi will be unveiling MIUI 9, the next version of its own skin, later this month alongside the launch of the Redmi 5X. Before that though, the company has confirmed that it would be upgrading the Mi 2 and Mi 2S to MIUI 9 as well.
Considering the Mi2 was launched in 2012 and the Mi2s in 2013, it is impressive to see Xiaomi update them to MIUI 9. This, however, does not mean that the handsets will receive the Android Nougat update — far from that. It is likely that MIUI 9 for the Mi 2 and Mi2s will be based on Android 5.0/5.1 Lollipop. Nonetheless, that should not stop these phones from getting all the new bells and whistles that Xiaomi will be debuting in MIUI 9.
Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun says that there are still over 5 million Mi2 and Mi2s smartphone users out there. Once MIUI 9 is unveiled later this month on July 26th, Xiaomi expects to roll out the upgrade to the Mi2 and Mi2s within a couple of months.
Xiaomi will first be rolling out the MIUI 9 beta update for the Mi 6, Redmi Note 4 (Snapdragon variant), and Redmi Note 4X.
As for the list of compatible devices that will be receiving the MIUI 9 update, the list is as follows:
Mi 6, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5s, Mi 5c, Mi 5, Mi 4S, Mi 4c, Mi 4, Mi 3, Mi 2/2S, Mi MIX, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Mi Note 2, Mi Note/Pro, Mi Pad 2, Mi Pad 1, Redmi Note 4X (MTK), Redmi Note 4X (SD), Redmi Note 4, Redmi Note 3 (MTK), Redmi Note 3 (SD), Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note, Redmi Pro, Redmi 4X, Redmi 4A, Redmi 4, Redmi 4 Prime, Redmi 3S/Prime, Redmi 3, Redmi 2A, Redmi 2/Prime, Redmi 1S, Redmi 1
While most OEMs end up not supporting their device within a couple of years of launching it, Xiaomi has set a new benchmark by promising to update even its four-year-old handset to MIUI 9.
