RED, the company known for making expensive cameras which are primarily used for shooting movies, today announced its first smartphone: the RED Hydrogen. In typical RED fashion, the company has only revealed the price of the phone, with hardly any word on its features and specs.
The RED Hydrogen will be available in two build options: Titanium and Aluminium. The former is priced at $1,595 while the latter is priced at $1,195. This is a limited time pricing and does not include shipping, tax, and handling charges which would be charged extra.
Apart from this, RED also confirms that the Hydrogen will be the world’s first smartphone to make use of a 5.7-inch holographic display. And that’s about it. There is no word on the internal specifications of the device, its camera, battery capacity, or the Android version it would run on.
The teaser image posted on the website does confirm that the handset will come with a USB-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a camera, and a seemingly modular design as the handset features a Moto Z-like pogo connector pins at its rear. RED cameras are known for their upgradability and it is likely that with Hydrogen, the company is taking a similar approach.
And if the vague specs and the high price of the handset were not already enough, the RED Hydrogen will only start shipping from Q1, 2018.
So, if you have the money to blow, don’t mind waiting until next year to know the actual specs of the Hydrogen, go ahead and order the RED Hydrogen.
