At Lollapalooza, a music festival, Samsung was giving away brand new batteries for your smartphone if you sent out a tweet with the “#poweron” hashtag. On the surface this sounds like a public relations coup meant to make people like the Samsung brand, but there’s actually more to it than that. Think about it, how many smartphones exist today that have replaceable batteries? Nokia’s budget Windows Phones, Samsung’s Galaxy phones, and that’s pretty much it.
Now the whole integrated battery versus replaceable battery thing is a debate I don’t want to get involved in since there is no right answer. Those who swear by replaceables say it’s good to get a new cell every 12 to 18 months. Those who swear by internals will sing from the rooftops about their devices’ sleek form factor. Whatever.
Will Samsung ever switch to non-replaceable batteries? I personally hope they do since it’s going to be the only way they’ll be able to give their phones more battery life without making them thicker due to the complicated mechanics involved in making a removable back door.
