Samsung was widely expected to integrate a fingerprint scanner into the display of the Galaxy S8 but could not do so due to yield issues and time constraints. It as automatically assumed then that the company would solve all such issues and use the fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy Note 8 especially since the Galaxy S8 was widely panned for its odd fingerprint location.

Turns out, that’s not going to be the case. A Samsung inside spoke to Naver and revealed that while the Korean company made “every effort” to integrate the fingerprint scanner into the display of the Galaxy S8, it has decided against it “on this strategic phone due to various technical limitations such as security.”

“We made every effort to install a display-integrated fingerprint sensor on Galaxy Note 8, but we decided not to install it on this strategic phone due to various technical limitations such as security.” – Samsung Electronics official on the Galaxy Note 8’s integrated fingerprint scanner

The Korean company is still working on this technology though and now plans on incorporating it on the Galaxy S9 this year.

Samsung is not the only one facing technological challenges in trying to integrate the fingerprint scanner into the display of its smartphones. Apple is also widely expected to integrate the Touch ID fingerprint scanner into the iPhone 8’s cover glass but various rumors pointed to its suppliers facing yield issues. This apparently even led to the company to create prototypes of the handsets with fingerprint sensor located at the rear. However, recent reports do point to the Cupertino company solving overcoming yield issues just in time for the iPhone 8 to enter mass production.

Even if the Galaxy Note 8 ends up shipping with a traditional fingerprint scanner, Samsung should at least reposition it further down below and use a better sensor while at it. The fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S8 is extremely unreliable and its odd position makes it a pain to reach especially on the larger Galaxy S8+.

Samsung is rumored to use a 6.3-inch QHD+ AMOLED display on the Note 8. It will also feature a dual camera setup at the rear, with a 3200mAh battery powering the device.
