Galaxy S8 Launch

A Korean daily reports that in addition to iris scanner, the Samsung Galaxy S8 will also feature facial recognition. Samsung has had to apparently take this decision due to the slow speed of the iris scanner.

The accuracy of the iris scanner is also not up to the mark which is why Samsung decided to add facial recognition to the Galaxy S8 as well. As per the report, the facial recognition will unlock the Galaxy S8 in less than 0.01 seconds.

“Due to some limits of iris scanning such as speed and accuracy, we have decided to add facial recognition to the Galaxy S8,” a Samsung official was quoted as saying. “With a face scanner, it will take less than 0.01 seconds to unlock the phone.”

Samsung is already testing prototypes of Galaxy S8 with this feature built-in. Considering the handset is still more than three weeks away from its official unveiling and launch, the company has enough time to fine-tune this feature.

Interestingly, Android already features a built-in face unlock feature that Google debuted back with KitKat. The feature makes use of the front camera on the handset and while quick, its reliability goes down in poor lighting conditions. It remains to be seen if Samsung will be using a special sensor for the facial recognition functionality on the Galaxy S8 or not.

Apple is also rumored to add facial recognition functionality to the iPhone 8 this year, so it looks like Samsung is adding this feature to the Galaxy S8 to one-up its competitor.
