Moto G5

Motorola and Lenovo today officially unveiled the Moto G5 and G5 Plus. While Moto handsets have not met with much success in the European and US markets, the Moto G series is particularly popular in India and Brazil.

Last year, the Moto G4 and G4 Plus were widely panned for their plastic build quality and overheating issues. This year, Motorola has made amends, with the Moto G5/Plus packing specs and features that can easily take on its competition. If the Moto G5 or G5 Plus has managed to catch your attention and you want to know more about the devices, read below.

Moto G5 vs Moto G5 Plus

Unlike last year where the major difference between the Moto G4 and G4 Plus was in terms of camera, the Moto G5 and G5 Plus are different from each other in more ways than one. The Moto G5 is smaller, weaker, and cheaper than the G5 Plus which packs in more cutting-edge technology.

The Moto G5 features a 5.-inch 1080p display, an octa-core Snapdragon 430 chipset, and a removable 2800mAh battery. In comparison, the Moto G5 Plus features a slightly larger 5.2-inch 1080p display, a more powerful octa-core Snapdragon 625 chipset, and a larger but non-removable 3000mAh battery.

More importantly, though, both phones greatly differ from each other in the camera department. The Moto G5 comes with a 13MP shooter and a LED flash, while the G5 Plus packs in a superior 12MP shooter with Dual AF Pixels, a f/1.7 aperture and large 1.4um pixels. On the front, both phones make use of a wide-angle 5MP selfie shooter.

If budget permits, you really should go for the Moto G5 Plus as its more powerful chipset and superior camera make it a no brainer.

No More Overheating Issues

The Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus were known for overheating issues thanks to their fiery hot Snapdragon 617 chipset. Thankfully, this time around, Lenovo and Moto have used Qualcomm’s extremely efficient Snapdragon 625 chipset.

An octa-core chip, the Snapdragon 625 features eight Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2GHz. The most impressive part about this chip is that it is based on the 14nm FinFET process — same as the Snapdragon 821/820 and Exynos 8890 chips from last year — that makes it very power efficient and devoid of any overheating issues. This will ensure that even under heavy load, the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus remain cool.

TurboPower

Both variants of the Moto G5 come with TurboPower charging this time around. And Motorola is also bundling the TurboPower charger with both handsets. The Moto G5 features a slower 10W TurboPower charging technology, while the bigger Moto G5 Plus features a faster 15W TurboPower charging technology. This ensures that both handsets will be able to offer at least half a day of battery life with only 15 minutes of charging.

Nano Coating

The Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus are not water-resistant like the Moto G3 that launched in 2015. But like with every other Moto phone, the handsets do feature a nano-coating that makes them splash-proof to a certain extent. This does not mean that you can go ahead and dunk any of the two phones in water and expect them to survive. But the splash-proof nano-coating will ensure that the handset does not die if you accidentally spill water or any other liquid on it. The phones also have a better chance of surviving that off-chance drop in a bucket of water or a swimming pool.

Different RAM/Storage Variants

Motorola/Lenovo are going to offer the Moto G5 and G5 Plus in a multitude of storage and RAM variants this time around. Depending on where you live, the Moto G5 could come with either 32GB of storage (Latin America) or 16GB (Rest of the world). Similarly, the handset will come with 2GB RAM in almost all parts of the world except for India and Turkey where Motorola will also offer a 3GB RAM variant of the device.

For the Moto G5 Plus, Motorola will be offering the handset with 32/64GB storage in the United States and 16/32GB storage in the APAC reason. The Latin America and EMEA variant of the handset will only come with 32GB of storage. Likewise, the APAC version of the phone will come with 3/4GB RAM, while the EMEA version will come with 3GB. The Latin American variant will come with a paltry 2GB RAM.

if you are looking for an unlocked smartphone on a budget, the Moto G5 Plus should be right at the top of your list. The handset packs an impressive camera and build quality which cannot be matched by other phones in this range.
