Xiaomi today sent out invites confirming that it will be launching its own ‘Pinecone’ processor in China next week on February 28. Xiaomi has always relied on chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek for its devices, and this will be the first time that the company will be launching a device that it has developed in-house.
Details about the Pinecone SoC are scarce, though rumors point to the chipset being available in an octa-core variant clocked at 2.2GHz.
It’s likely that the Pinecone SoC from Xiaomi will be used inside the company’s budget and mid-range devices. The company has traditionally relied on Qualcomm’s flagship chipset for its flagship devices and will likely not disturb that partnership by launching a high-end SoC of its own.
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how Xiaomi’s first chipset stacks up against budget chipset offerings from Qualcomm and MediaTek which the Chinese company is already using in its existing devices.
