Google has started rolling out Duo 5.0 on the Google Play Store and iOS App Store with some bug fixes and plenty of other changes to improve the app’s overall experience.
As per the technical lead for Duo Justin Uberti, the update brings about major video quality improvements, with user testing showing highly positive results for the changes.
The developer also promises that the Duo team is putting “massive energy behind Duo media quality”, but developing and improving algorithms takes time. Nonetheless, the team still has “lots of stuff in the pipeline.”

The full change log of Duo 5.0 as per Justin is as follows:
- Major video quality improvements
- Simpler signup flow
- Seamless camera rotation
- Fix sound not playing issue
Despite Google’s rapid release cycle with Duo, the video chatting application still lacks a lot of features that one finds in other similar applications, with perhaps the ability to make only audio calls followed by group video calls being at the top. Duo’s ease of use and superior video call quality has made it popular in countries like India where internet speeds are still very low, with mobile data network being very spotty.
As always, Duo 5.0 is being rolled out in a staged manner on Google Play so the update can take up to a couple of weeks to show up on your device.
Do you continue to use Duo regularly? Or have you given up on the app?
