With 2016 coming to an end and MWC 2017 fast approaching, Samsung is now working hard on its flagship handset for the first half of next year: the Galaxy S8. While we have heard a few tidbits about the handset, it has not yet leaked in details. That changes today with the latest report from SamMobile that provides some new details about Samsung’s upcoming flagship.
Following the footsteps of Apple, Samsung will now also be removing the 3.5mm audio jack from the Galaxy S8 next year. The company will route the audio through the handset’s USB Type-C port. It is likely that to reduce compatibility issues and early adopter troubles, Samsung will be bundling a USB Type-C-to-3.5mm converter in the retail box of the S8.
A single USB-C port for both audio and charging also means that it will not be possible to charge the Galaxy S8 and listen to music at the same time without using a special adapter. Apple used the extra space freed up by the removal of the 3.5mm jack to increase the battery capacity and add a barometric pressure vent on the iPhone 7, so it will be interesting to see how Samsung uses the additional space on the Galaxy S8.
Additionally, SamMobile reports that the Galaxy S8 will continue to feature a Quad HD Super AMOLED display. However, unlike the Galaxy S7, the S8’s Quad HD display will feature an RGB pixel arrangement. All Quad HD AMOLED displays from Samsung up until now have used a Diamond PenTile matrix arrangement. (cityoflightpublishing.com) The increase in sub-pixels will not be noticeable in daily use, but it will help the Galaxy S8 in delivering a better virtual reality experience. This new Super AMOLED panel from Samsung will be made of a new material that will make it more power efficient and provide it with a larger life span.
Finally, the report states that Samsung will ditch the home button on the Galaxy S8. This will lead to the handset having a very high screen-to-body ratio, with the overall design of the handset being very similar to the Galaxy Note 7. As for the fingerprint scanner, Samsung is expected to use an optical fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S8 that will be embedded directly into the bottom half of the handset.
