The launch of Reliance Jio has led to a lot of confusion among the average Indian consumers on whether their phone supports Jio or not. With Jio’s backend being light years ahead of what other carriers in the country offer, this is not surprising.
This confusion is primarily among owners of mid-range and budget smartphone owners who have been attracted to Jio not because of its technologically advanced network, but because of its free three-month unlimited calls and data offer. Considering that Xiaomi’s budget and mid-range devices are very popular in India, many customers have been wondering whether their handset supports Jio’s 4G and VoLTE network or not.
The good news is that unlike Lenovo, Xiaomi had the foresight of making its phones fully compatible with Jio’s 4G and VoLTE network right from the get-go. Barring the Mi 4 and Mi 4i, all Xiaomi handsets launched in India within the last year or so are fully compatible with Jio. This includes the following devices:
- Redmi Note 3
- Redmi 3S/Prime
- Redmi 2 Prime
- Mi 5
- Mi Max
The Mi 4 is a 3G only device, so it will not work on Jio’s 4G network at all. As for the Mi 4i, it only supports Reliance Jio’s 4G network and not VoLTE. You can use Reliance’s Jio4GVoice app to make calls on the phone though.
