There are plenty of USB chargers available in the market, but not all of them work in the same manner. This only causes limited issues with devices that use a microUSB port, but with USB Type-C capable of carrying significantly higher current, this can lead to some serious issues. Like your USB Type-C smartphone unnecessarily heating up or burning themselves when charged with the wrong charger.
Then there is the case of USB Type-C chargers either supporting Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 or USB Power Delivery that further adds to the confusion and potentially putting your devices at risk.
So, to ease the pain of consumers going forward, the USB-IF has announced a Certified USB Charger Compliance and Logo Program for USB chargers for Type-C devices. This means that all USB chargers going forward will be certified based on their specifications, which should reduce confusion among consumers and reduce any risk of a device malfunctioning due to it being charged from the wrong charger.
“USB-IF understands consumers want to carry less equipment without sacrificing battery life or flexibility,” said Jeff Ravencraft, USB-IF President and COO. “Guided by the USB brand promise of ‘it just works,’ the Certified USB Charger Program will make it easier to share device chargers across the compliant USB Type-C landscape, whether consumers are at home, in the office or anywhere in between.”
This move from USB-IF will ensure less confusion among consumers on which USB charger to buy going forward and ensure that your devices are not at risk of frying themselves.
