The president of Samsung’s mobile communications division Koh Dong-jin has confirmed that Samsung will be updating the Galaxy Note 7 to Android 7.0 Nougat within 2-3 months.

The Note 7 runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box right now with a new version of Touchwiz. However, with Google scheduled to release Nougat sometime later this month, Note 7 buyers will be eagerly waiting for the update to land on their handset. Thus, an official timeframe from Samsung will go a long way in instilling confidence among potential Note 7 buyers about their decision.

Dong-jin said that while it is important for Samsung to quickly roll out major OS updates for its devices, stability and a “seamless platform” is more crucial. So the company plans on doing enough beta testing before rolling out any OS updates.

Over the last year, Samsung has started beta testing major software updates by running a beta program in its home market, South Korea. It is likely that we will see the company start a beta program for the Nougat update for both the Galaxy S7 and Note 7 before it starts rolling out the update publicly.

The executive also confirmed that Samsung will be launching the Black Onyx variant of the Note 7 in Korea in October. The color accounted for only 10 percent of the sales for the Note 5, which is why the company decided to launch it at a later date in its home market.

On foldable handsets becoming a reality, Dong-jin said that while the company has keen interest in them, the “time is not ripe to commercialize foldable smartphones.” So, it looks like rumors about Samsung launching a foldable smartphone next year are not going to turn into reality.
