Xiaomi today announced its first VR product, the Mi VR Play. The VR headset from the Chinese company features a very innovative design that has not been seen in any other VR headset until now.
The Mi VR Play is wrapped in Lycra that makes it comfortable and more durable than other competing VR headsets in the market. It also features a unique two-way zipper design that ensures compatibility with a wide array of smartphones — right from 4.7-inch to 5.7-inch. The design also holds your device securely so it is not going to fall down during an intense VR session. Interestingly, Xiaomi will be offering the Mi VR Play in a selection of colors and styles — something that no other VR headset in the market offers.
Alongside the Mi VR Play, Xiaomi also launched the companion Mi VR app. The app will provide users with VR content from partners like YouKu, Dooribun, Nast Traveler, and more.
Xiaomi issued a call for beta testers for the Mi VR Play in China on August 1 that led to it receiving more than 1 million registrations in 8 hours. Under its beta testing program, the company will be offering beta testers the option to buy the Mi VR Play for only RMB 1 ($0.15). The public availability and pricing of the Mi VR will be announced at a later date. As it is usually the case with most of Xiaomi’s products, don’t expect the Mi VR Play to be available outside of China anytime soon.
