The world is eagerly anticipating the launch of the Galaxy Note 7 next week from Samsung, but rumors about the company’s flagship for next year, the Galaxy S8, have started making their way to the internet. While we have heard a bit about Samsung’s flagship handset for next year, some new rumors coming out of China provide a clearer picture about it.

The rumors point to the Galaxy S8 being codenamed as the ‘Project Dream’ internally with its release pegged to be at MWC 2017. The handset will feature a 5.5-inch 4K display that should make it ideal for VR. As for its codename, it is influenced by Google’s Daydream VR initiative. While devices with as a Full HD display are also receiving certification for Daydream, Samsung wants to offer the best VR experience with the Galaxy S8 and its 4K display.

The company has already demoed a 5.5-inch 4K AMOLED display with a pixel density of 806 ppi. This is not the first time that we are hearing about the Galaxy S8 coming with a 4K resolution display, and looking at how Samsung bumps the screen resolution of its flagship Galaxy handset once in every two years, the chances of this rumor turning out to be true are very likely.

The switch to a 4K resolution display is likely going to lead to the Galaxy S8’s battery life being affected negatively, so it will be interesting to see how Samsung manages to negate the extra power draw. It is possible that the company will use the same tactics as what Sony did with the Xperia Z5 Premium where the display ran at 4K resolution only in selected apps.
