After expanding Samsung Pay to Singapore, Spain, and Australia earlier this year, Samsung is now expanding its mobile payment service to Brazil. This makes Samsung Pay the first mobile payment service to be available in South America.
At launch, Samsung Pay in Brazil will support banks and issuers such as Banco do Brasil, Brasil Pré-Pagos, Caixa, Porto Seguro, and Santander. The Korean company is also working with other banks like Banrisul, Bradesco, and Nubank to expand support to them. A list of banks, credit unions, and retailers that support Samsung Pay can be found here.
“We are extremely excited that Samsung Pay is now available in Brazil. As the first market in South America to roll out our mobile payment service, Brazil will pave the way for the region’s adoption of Samsung Pay,” said André Varga, Product Director of Samsung’s Mobile Devices Division in Brazil.
Unlike Android Pay and Apple Pay, Samsung Pay can work with traditional card readers as well thanks to its MST technology. This makes it relatively easier for Samsung to rollout its mobile payment service to more less developed markets of the world.
Samsung is one of the major sponsors of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics this year, so it is not surprising to see the company provide special attention to Brazil and the smartphone market there. The company earlier this month announced a special Olympics edition of the Galaxy S7 edge that it will be giving to more than 12,500 athletes who will be taking part in the Olympic games this year.
