Samsung’s little sister, LG, has just announced that their next flagship phone is going to be called the G2. Rumors about the death of the Optimus brand were floating around the internets well over a month ago, so this news shouldn’t be a surprise to any of you.

Now the real question is why? Well, I can think of three reasons.

One, the Optimus has brand vibes attached to it. Every Optimus device that I can think of has had at least one major flaw. The Optimus 2X had horrible software. The Optimus 3D was a complete joke. The Optimus 4X HD sold like 17 units, globally. The Optimus G Pro was made out of the cellophane. The list just goes on and on, but I’ll stop now.

Two, LG Optimus G2 just sounds like a mouthful. Both Galaxy and Optimus are three syllable words, but Galaxy draws your attention more since it contains “x” and “y”, two letters that are rarely found in other English words.

Three, and this is a stretch, but LG can finally compare their “G” device with Samsung’s “G” device. As in, forget buying the GS4, but the G2. And you know people are just going to start calling it GG.

With the “G2”, LG is trying to grow up, and I honestly hope they do, because I’m frankly getting a bit tired of seeing Samsung dominate the Android space. What’s funny is that LG has all the ingredients to kick Samsung’s ass. They make many of the components needed to build a smartphone, it’s just they can’t seem to put them together into something that’s worth recommending.

Will that change on August 7th? Doubt it.
