Helio X20

At an event in Shenzhen, China today, MediaTek’s co-COO and EVP Jeffrey Ju revealed that the first smartphone with its deca-core Helio X20 chip will be making their way to the market next month.

MediaTek had initially announced its 10-core Helio X20 chip in May last year. The chip features four ‘low’ power Cortex-A53 cores clocked at up to 1.4GHz, four Cortex-A57 cores clocked at up to 2GHz, and two Cortex-A72 cores clocked at up to 2.3GHz. Despite the increase in the number of cores, MediaTek claims that this chip consumes 30 percent less power, while still offering 15 percent more performance.

Other features of the chipset include support for 4K displays, LTE Cat 12/13 network support, a new Imagiq ISP that also supports 3D camera sensors, and more.

Additionally, MediaTek also unveiled a higher-spec’d variant of the Helio X20, dubbed the Helio X25. This chipset features a slightly higher clocked Cortex-A72 cores at 2.5GHz and a Mali-T880 MP4 GPU clocked at 780MHz for slightly better performance. However, this chipset will remain exclusive to the Meizu Pro 6 for at least a few months after its launch, as revelaed by Meizu president Bai Yongxiang. As to when exactly will Meizu launch the Pro 6 still remains a mystery for now.

It goes without saying that the Helio X20 competes directly against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 chipset. The latter is a quad-core chip that is already found inside major flagships like the LG G5 and the Samsung Galaxy S7. Last year, the fiery Snapdragon 810 chip allowed MediaTek to gain quite a bit of ground to Qualcomm, but with the latter back with its impressive Snapdragon 820 chipset this year, it will be interesting to see how the Helio X20 stacks up against it.
