A teaser put up on Amazon India has revealed that Xiaomi is gearing up to launch the Redmi Note 2 Prime in the country. The teaser doesn’t call out the device by name, but the #PrimeIsComing tag is a clear indication of what device we can expect. The announcement will take place on December 15, a date Xiaomi has confirmed for the launch of a “secret new product.”
Of course, the Redmi Note 2 Prime isn’t really a secret since the phone was launched in China earlier this year, where it was a major success thanks to a low price and the company’s popularity in its home country. It’s likely to be a hit in the Indian market as well, especially if Xiaomi can match the launch price of the original Redmi Note (Rs. 9,999 for the 4G model).
It’s unclear if the regular Redmi Note 2 will be made available as well; the only differences between the Prime and standard variant are the storage capacity and chipset clock speed. Xiaomi isn’t allowed to use MediaTek processors in India, so the company will probably use the Snapdragon 615 for the Indian version of the device.
Other specs remain the same across both variants: a 5.5-inch Full HD display, MediaTek Helio X10 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 13 MP and 5 MP rear and front cameras, 4G connectivity, and a 3,020 mAh battery. On the software front, the devices run Android 5.0 Lollipop with MIUI 7.
