Earlier this year, the Google Play Store started displaying an IAP label for apps or games that had any kind of In-App purchases. Building on it, Google is now making it mandatory for developers to specify whether their apps are ad-supported or not.
For now, specifying whether their app has ads or not remains optional for developers. However, for developers who want their apps listed under the Play Store’s “Designed for Families” category, answering that question is a must. After January 11, 2016, all developers will be required to declare whether their app contains ads or not.
Google’s definition of ads inside apps is pretty broad and includes “third party ad networks, display ads, native ads, and/or banner ads.” It even includes sponsored articles and apps that show ad within a feed.
Google will be running checks of its own to make sure that your declaration matches the status of your app. If it detects that your app has any kind of third-party ad SDK, it will strongly recommend you to select the appropriate option. Try gaming Google, and the company will remove your app from the Play Store for violation of its guidelines.
