The BlackBerry Priv releases today on AT&T’s network in the United States. To reassure potential customers regarding the future of the handset, BlackBerry’s President of Devices has revealed in an interview that the Priv will get the Marshmallow update “sometime in the new year.”

While “sometime in the new year” is not really a specific timeframe, it does show that BlackBerry is committed to the Priv, whatever its fate might be. Out of the box, the Priv runs on Android 5.1.1 that has been customised by BlackBerry to make it more secure.

BlackBerry has already detailed that it will be providing monthly security updates to the Priv — at least in Europe, and if needed, the company will also released ‘hotfix’ update to patch any series security exploit that needs its immediate attention.

Despite BlackBerry’s best efforts, the reviews of the Priv has been disappointing. BlackBerry’s customised security platform does not seem to be that impressive, and the $699 price of the handset does not help things either.
