Later today, Google will be unveiling the much anticipated Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Almost every key detail about the devices have leaked over the past several hours, including their price and availability.
The leaked prices of the handsets delighted many Nexus fanboys, especially since the Huawei Nexus 6P despite coming with some beastly internals is only priced at $499. However, in order to achieve such a low price point for both these devices, Google has had to make some compromises.
Firstly, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will not be coming with Qi wireless charing. Google has included wireless charging in all its Nexus devices released over the last two years, so it is surprising to see the company omit the feature entirely on its 2015 lineup of Nexus devices. With fast charging support and the new power saving optimisations in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, it is likely that the new Nexus handsets will last for a significantly longer time on a single charge thereby negating the need for wireless charging.
Secondly, the rear camera of both Nexus devices lack Optical Image Stabilisation. Again, the last two Nexus handsets from Google — the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 6 — featured OIS, so this move is a strange one from Google. The use of OIS allows the camera to better compensate for minor shakes and vibrations while shooting pictures and videos. The presence of OIS is helpful in low-light situations as it allows the sensor to absorb more light by keeping the shutter speed open for longer.
The reason behind omitting OIS from the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P is not a monetary one though. Both new Nexus handsets will feature a custom 12.3MP rear shooter with a pixel size of 1.55um. The larger pixel size indicates that the camera module will be quite large and dense, which technically would have made implementing OIS impossible in a limited amount of space.
Lastly, both new Nexus devices will not feature a microSD card slot, even though the FCC documents suggest otherwise. Google has always been against microSD card slots, so it is not surprising for the company to not include them on the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.
